Troy Morris - Brisbane's Best Personal Trainer, Functional Fitness Gym Newstead

Troy Morris – Lead Personal Trainer & Owner

Voted Brisbane’s Best Personal Trainer by the Courier Mail, Troy has spent over a decade coaching everyone from total beginners to competitive athletes. He’s the founder of Functional Fitness Gym and the reason the studio exists – he built it because he wanted a personal training space that didn’t feel like a big box gym.

Troy’s clients say his real strength is making personal training about more than physical change. It’s mindset, quality of life, and giving you the tools to keep training for life – not for a 12-week program.

Specialties:

  • Functional fitness for everyday life
  • Weight loss and body composition (Grace’s 36kg transformation is one of Troy’s clients)
  • Boxing for fitness and technique
  • Strength training (beginner to advanced)
  • Strength and endurance combined
  • HIIT and metabolic conditioning

Best for: Anyone who’s nervous about gyms, anyone wanting a long-term coach, anyone chasing a real body transformation.

Tony Torrisi - Senior Personal Trainer, Functional Fitness Gym Newstead

Tony Torrisi – Senior Personal Trainer & Mind-Body Coach

Tony has been a personal trainer for over 17 years and has changed the lives of clients across every age bracket in the Newstead area. He’s known for two things: an intense (but fun) coaching style, and a deep understanding of human psychology – what it actually takes to change unhealthy habits and make them stick.

Tony’s approach is holistic – he treats mental wellness as the foundation that physical results sit on top of. His sessions blend tailored strength and conditioning with mindset coaching, helping clients prioritise moderation, balance, and the brain-body connection that drives long-term change.

Qualifications:

  • Cert III / IV / Diploma in Fitness
  • Cert III Massage Therapy
  • Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Black Belt (7 years)
  • Certified MMA Coach – Boxing, Wrestling, Muay Thai, Kickboxing, BJJ
  • Australian Ninja Warrior course tester and contestant
  • Exelgene Certified
  • Advanced First Aid

Best for: Clients who want a coach as much as a trainer, anyone interested in MMA / BJJ conditioning, anyone serious about behaviour change alongside physical results.

Terry O’Neill – Personal Trainer, Strength & Conditioning, Combat Sports

Terry brings over 10 years in the health and fitness industry, with a unique background that few PTs in Newstead can match. He started training in martial arts at 16, began instructing at 18, and went on to help train national and international champions before competing himself at amateur and professional level in Boxing, Muay Thai, and MMA.

Most recently Terry was a head coach at Facilities Fitness on Commercial Road, just down the road in Newstead – so he knows the local training community intimately. He’s since refocused on Strength and Conditioning, CrossFit, and High Intensity Interval Training, bringing that combat-athlete intensity into programs for everyday people who want to train hard and see fast results.

Specialties:

  • Body re-composition (lean muscle gain + fat loss simultaneously)
  • CrossFit-style functional fitness programming
  • Boxing and Muay Thai – cardio and technique
  • Strength and conditioning for combat sports athletes
  • High Intensity Interval Training (HIIT)
  • Running and endurance programming

Best for: People who want to push themselves hard, anyone interested in combat-sport conditioning, athletes coming from CrossFit or martial arts looking for tailored 1-on-1 programming.

What a personal training session looks like

Sessions start from 30 minutes – long enough to do meaningful work, short enough to fit before work, during a lunch break, or after work without taking over your day. Longer sessions (45 or 60 minutes) are available if you want more volume or a more thorough warm-up and cool-down. Here’s what a 30-minute 1-on-1 PT session looks like:

  • Quick check-in (1-2 minutes) – Your trainer asks how the week’s been, how recovery’s felt, anything that’s tight or sore.
  • Targeted warm-up (3-5 minutes) – Specific prep for what you’re training that day – not generic cardio.
  • Main strength work (18-22 minutes) – The heart of your session. Programmed around your goals. Your trainer demonstrates, watches every rep, corrects form in real time.
  • Quick wrap-up (2-3 minutes) – Brief stretch on what you just trained. Confirm how it felt, what to focus on next session.

You’ll get a written program logged so you can see exactly what you did and what’s coming. Progress is tracked – weights, reps, body measurements (if relevant), photos at agreed checkpoints. If you want longer sessions, just ask – we have 45-minute and 60-minute options too.

Real results – Grace’s 36kg transformation

Grace came to us 18 months ago. She’d tried gyms before and bounced off – they were intimidating, the equipment was confusing, and she felt invisible. She wanted to lose weight, get stronger, and feel like she belonged in a gym.

We started with twice-weekly 1-on-1 PT sessions with Troy. The first month was about building confidence and basic movement patterns – nothing complicated, nothing scary. From there, we progressively added strength work, then accountability around food, then her own gym sessions between PTs.

18 months in, Grace has lost 36 kilograms. But the number she cares about more is how she feels – she trains on her own now, lifts confidently, sleeps better, has more energy for her family, and walks into the gym like she owns the place.

Her story isn’t about a quick fix or a 12-week shred. It’s about consistent training with a coach who built a program around her real life. That’s what 1-on-1 personal training in Newstead at Functional Fitness looks like.

Frequently asked questions about personal training in Newstead

How long are personal training sessions?

Sessions start from 30 minutes. That’s the most popular length – short enough to fit before work, during a lunch break, or after work, but long enough to do meaningful strength and conditioning work. We also offer 45-minute and 60-minute sessions if you want more volume or thorough warm-up/cool-down time.

How much does a personal trainer in Newstead cost?

Our 1-on-1 personal training sessions start from $80, with pricing varying by trainer and session length. Across Newstead and inner-Brisbane, PT pricing typically ranges from $80-$130 per session – we sit at the accessible end of that range, with the credential to back it (Brisbane’s Best PT, Courier Mail).

How many PT sessions do I need to see results?

Most members feel changes – better energy, sleep, mood, posture – within 3-4 sessions. Visible body composition changes typically take 8-12 weeks of consistent training (2-3 sessions per week, plus your own training). For specific goals like a target weight loss or a particular strength benchmark, expect 4-6 months of consistent work.

Which trainer should I choose?

It depends on your goals. Troy is ideal for nervous beginners and long-term body transformations. Tony is for clients who want a coach as much as a trainer – mindset, BJJ/MMA conditioning, behaviour change. Terry suits people who want to push hard – CrossFit-style, combat sports conditioning, fast progress. We’ll help you match in the free consult.

What’s the difference between PT here and PT at a big gym?

Two big differences. First, we’re a private boutique studio – no waiting for equipment, no crowded floor, no music war. Your session is in a calm, focused space. Second, your PT is on the books here every day – not a rotating shift worker. You build a real coaching relationship over time, not a series of one-off bookings.

Do I need to be fit before starting personal training?

No. The opposite, actually – PT is most valuable for beginners. Without a coach, beginners typically waste 3-6 months doing the wrong things, getting injured, or losing motivation. A few months with a trainer at the start saves you years of trial and error.

Can I do PT without a gym membership?

Yes – you don’t need to be a member to train with one of our personal trainers. PT clients get gym access included during their session. If you want to also train on your own between PT sessions, talk to us about a combined PT + membership package.

What if I miss a session?

We ask for 24 hours notice on cancellations. If you cancel within 24 hours, the session is forfeited. If you give us more than 24 hours, we’ll reschedule you – no charge.

Can I train with a specific trainer or do I get assigned one?

You choose. After a free consultation we’ll match you with the trainer who’s the best fit for your goals – but if you have a preference, that’s yours. Most members stay with the same trainer long-term.

How do I get started?

Easiest way is to book a free consultation. We’ll meet at the gym for 20-30 minutes, talk through your goals, show you around, and recommend whether 1-on-1 PT or another option is the right fit. No sales pressure – if PT isn’t right, we’ll tell you.
